Hanford Traffic Safety Analysis & Implementation Support

TSI conducted in 2009-2010 a site-wide traffic safety assessment for the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Reservation in Richland, Washington. TSI was selected by the Mission Support Alliance (MSA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to make recommendations to improve vehicle safety on the Hanford Reservation, which is experiencing a large influx of new workers and site activity, related to significant ARRA stimulus funding expected over the next several years. The site has very high volumes of directional traffic on two-lane roads during the morning and evening commutes, as well as a significant number of vehicles traveling at very high rates of speed throughout the day and night, and drivers exhibiting a variety of aggressive driving behaviors. The evaluation included analysis of roadway geometrics, roadway conditions, traffic volume, vehicle speeds, collisions, aggressive driver behaviors, and level and effectiveness of enforcement. We conducted on-site evaluation of road and traffic conditions, interviews with key individuals. We made findings and recommendations which were presented to the Hanford Traffic Safety Enhancement Committee, the MSA and the DOE. TSI is currently assisting the DOE and MSA with implementation of the recommendations, which encompass conceptual design and engineering, operations, enforcement, and education.
